Masters of American Music: Memphis Minnie

Masters of American Music: Memphis Minnie

Roots of American Music presents a new monthly series with Visible Voice Books exploring the artists who shaped the foundations of American music.

The series opens with a tribute to pioneering blues guitarist and songwriter Memphis Minnie, performed by Cleveland musicians Kevin T. Richards and Kari Ann Rutushin.

Memphis Minnie recorded more than 250 songs between the 1920s and 1950s and helped define the sound of country blues with her powerful guitar playing and commanding stage presence.

Richards, founder of Roots of American Music and a master of the Piedmont finger style guitar tradition, spent more than two decades leading the organization as Executive Director, where he continues to contribute as a performing artist, educator, and mentor within the ROOTS community. Singer-songwriter Kari Ann Rutushin is a multi-instrumentalist and teaching artist whose performances span blues, jazz, folk, and early American roots styles.
