Concept: ROAM is creating a website that will document
our ongoing residencies; provide leave-behind lessons, assignments and
examples for teachers; and serve as an archive of American history,
experiences and memories. This website will contain documentation and
more from each of our residencies but also contain additional resources,
histories, documentaries, interviews and documents from a vast array
of sources including our own field recording teams, historians and teaching-artists.
This is a 3-phase project.
Phase I (7/1/2006 – 6/30/2007)
The first phase of this project will enhance an ongoing residency for
3rd 5th and 8th grade students at Cleveland Municipal School Districts
Empire Computech. Our Empire Computech Residency with 3rd graders was
created to augment the school's teachings on communities, specifically
the Glenville Community in which Empire is located. Our goal, over a
6 week period, was to help the 3rd graders learn about the people and
places in their own community. To this effect we spent all or part of
5 classes talking about the different street names, restaurants, stores,
schools, and modes of transportation in the area, and approximately
all or part of 3 classes learning about some of the occupations of people
living in the Glenville neighborhood. During each classroom session
the information discussed was put into lyrical form. This netted two
original Glenville Neighborhood songs. Additionally, as part of out
program, 3rd Graders interviewed "First Voices" in their community.
The class was visited by two neighborhood leaders: Officer Butler from
the police force and Pastor Toby from a local church. Officer Butler
talked about his role in protecting the neighborhood and Pastor Toby
spoke of her role in building a local

Phase II (7/1/2007 – 6/30/2008)
The second phase of this project will contain information from all our
school residencies including residencies that are specific to the state
of Ohio as well as many other historical archives and information that
we have collected. This enhanced website will be made available on a
state wide basis.
Phase III (7/1/2008 – 6/30/2009)
The third phase of this project will include all ROAM residencies and
will be available on a national basis.
