In The Great Community Mystery, students combine songwriting with the use of interactive technology and Web-based map programs to "search" their streets for a missing instrument. The program explores the meaning of community and the roles people play in a community.

During their search they will meet several important community members who will not only clue them into where they might find the missing instrument but also what (and who) they might find right down the street from they live, learn, and play. This five-week residency not only introduces student to local organizations and community members, but also builds map reading and computer technology skills.

The objective of this project is to educate students about the community in which they live from a historical, geographical, and personal perspective. Participants learn basic concepts of geography through community-based lessons, improve literacy skills, heighten literacy skills, compose songs, and increase their community awareness. Many forms of traditional American music use personal narrative, folklore, and other aspects culture to express the collective experiences of the population from where they originated.

Upon completion of this project, students should be able to:

  • Explain how citizens take part in civic life in order to promote the common good.
  • Use maps to ask and answer questions about the local community.
  • Use a compass rose and cardinal direction to describe the relative location of places.
  • Describe how people help to make the community a better place in which to live.
